...What... But we get revived here all the time. What—I mean... Why are you sure it won't work the same for you?

There is a little bit of technology in me that serves to verify my identity at home. It's tied to everything I need to live as a member of society. My career. The place I live. My food. My clothes. My ability to travel or access services.

They're tamper-proof to prevent identity theft. If they get damaged or stop detecting signs of life, they self-destruct completely. They can't be repaired, afterward. The information can't be recovered.

Oye, that sounds as serious as it gets... Are you sure it's tamper-proof though? Peony has a lot of tech geniuses who might be able to do something to help.

If it happens, naturally, I'll ask them for help. But it was designed by tech geniuses to be impervious to other tech geniuses, so I'm not going to count on it.

I wouldn't expect you to anyway. ...What happens to someone if they don't have one of those things in your world?

Incarceration until they're able to verify their ID. But it's a slow process, and I don't have that much time left. So if I'm going to die in prison anyway, I might as well stay in this one. The company's better.

I think you can do better than this world. Maybe Levi's world? It sounds like the only real problems there are contained in their highschool.

Yeah. We'll see.

But now you understand what I meant when I said I'd like to go home, but it's complicated.

Yeah... It's really not fair. If I were you I'd just wish for the technology to not even exist anymore, but I dunno what that would actually do to your world.

If I could wish for anything, it probably wouldn't be to change a global system just so I could live one more month as a cog in a machine before disappearing forever, without a single trace left behind. If I got that far, I'm sure I can come up with something more satisfying.

What will you wish for? For yourself.
spinebuddyandme: (Thinkin bout bug stuff)

Re: Memories

[personal profile] spinebuddyandme 2024-05-07 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
You could wish for more than a month instead.

But for me...I haven't decided yet. The one I've been thinking about the most is using it to cripple The Reach's empire, but figuring out the best way do that is a galaxy-sized headache. They're so far spread that there's no telling what might happen in the power vacuum they'd leave behind.

Re: Memories

[personal profile] wants_the_phd 2024-05-07 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
That does seem much more difficult to figure out, for sure.

Perhaps... you could wish for it to be overthrown by a group of your preference, instead? An organization that is complex enough to repair what damage has been done, and replace it with something good instead of creating space for something worse.

Use your wish to delegate, maybe.

[personal profile] spinebuddyandme 2024-05-07 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
That's not a bad idea... The Green Lanterns pulled it off a few thousand years ago, so maybe they could just do it again.

Re: Memories

I dunno, but it scared The Reach so bad they were still programming Green Lantern PTSD into their weapons thousands of years after it happened.

This time you'll have to make sure there isn't any Reach left to have PTSD.

Scarab likes that idea, but I dunno. I'm not a fan of total genocide. Maybe I can word the wish to keep them from regaining that much power instead.

Re: Memories

[Thinks about it.]

Could you... wish for all members of the Reach to have a change of heart and join the Green Lanterns?

Then you'd have an entire galaxy-spanning organization's worth of infrastructure already fleshed out, trained up, and entrenched, working for your agenda instead of their own. And with less death involved all around.
spinebuddyandme: (Yeah I could take him)

Re: Memories

[personal profile] spinebuddyandme 2024-05-08 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Charon suggested that too. It's still kind of...a lot like what they did to Scarab's whole species.

I don't want to just program them magically, but maybe I could wish for them to all spontaneously develop empathy or something. They could figure it out from there.
