[the morning of day 22 begins with a light drizzle, as has been typical for the past few days. but despite the damp weather, a playlist of music also echoes across the pasture, luring you towards the center!]

[there, you will find that someone has planted a large bamboo tree, which is surrounded by wooden tables that are covered with colorful slips of paper and pens. a colorful sign, decorated with random doodles of stars, clouds, suns, and other fun shapes, contains a set of instructions:]

WELCOME TO TANABATA!

WRITE A WISH ON A PIECE OF PAPER AND TIE IT TO THE BAMBOO TREE.

HAVE FUN!

[the music and the bamboo wishing tree are a great start to the festival, but other people have been hard at work to make this a day to remember, right?]

[it's time to celebrate Tana-baa-ta!]

Sure. If it feels too easy, I can always see about upping the difficulty.

[a shrug] Or just show off.

Who would I even be showing off for?

Let's start with the normal version before we consider increasing the difficulty. I'd look stupid trying hard mode before I completed normal mode, right?

[he shrugs again, quirking a grin]

Dunno, someone other than me has to like this stuff.

[he holds out the toy gun] Maybe a tiny bit. Normal mode it is.

[takes the gun with a laugh]

Enough people here know how to use a gun that I doubt you're the only person who likes this stuff. Wait around for long enough and all of them will wander over.

[he is a very good shot; normal mode is too easy for him, he's going to hit all of the targets]

Fair point. Little worried one of the young ones will walk over and put me to shame.

[he's not, he'll be impressed cuz he's a dork. And he's impressed now, too]

Heh, normal mode is way too easy for you, nice shooting.

I think most of the people who can handle a gun are at least over the age of twenty. Mostly.

[offers him the gun back when he's done]

We have mandatory military service in my country. So, everyone learns how to shoot past a certain age. That's all.

[he takes it back, reloading it and setting it back on the booth]

That's all.

[he tilts his head towards the prizes] What do you want?

[peers at the prizes]

One of the cute stuffed animals?

[he leans over to grab one and tosses it over]

Wanna try with the higher difficulty?

[catches the lil stuffed animal and tucks it in his jacket safely]

Hmm. Sure, why not? I don't have anything better to do. Exactly how are you increasing the difficulty, though?

Even the poor innocent sailors? Only if you can live with the consequences.

The targets I'm supposed to hit, I mean. Just the pirates. The sailors haven't done anything wrong.
