I know! But warlocks wouldn't be warlocks if they were wise. They do tend to be very charming though. I guess the looks make up for the lack of common sense!

Probably? Maybe? I've never met someone who's tried it, though.

My sister is planning to go to school to be an academic mage. She's an ambient weather mage, but it's hard for her to find work that isn't war magic or where she isn't stealing rain from other lands.

That's too bad. There are so many fun things you could do if you could control the weather! Like, what if someone was having a party outdoors and wanted to be sure that it wouldn't rain! Or that it definitely would?

Well, yes, but the rain has to come from somewhere, which is Tris's issue. A lot of what an ambient mage has to work with is what's already there.

Ohhh... Like, calling rain in one place would take the rain from another place? I can see how that could lead to some issues!

Exactly. To be a good weather mage, you need to know how weather works without magic. The same for anything else -- the more you know about what you are working with, the more efficiently you can use magic to get a certain result.

That's...really sensible, actually! Sometimes when I listen to wizards talk about magic, they make it sound like they're just conjuring fireballs and stuff out of nowhere.
