[Actually, you know what, Chronos isn't quite sure where she resided. She spoke to him inside of his head, but most of their communication was done whenever he entered a state of unconsciousness. She couldn't read his thoughts either - he had to speak aloud for her to hear him, if she spoke to him whilst he was awake. Hmm.]
Sort of? She can't read my thoughts. I have to speak aloud if she wishes to converse with me, so I don't think she lives in my mind exactly. Also, most of our conversations happen when I'm asleep. I find myself in this strange space, and we talk face-to-face there.
[It was a pretty boring space, admittedly: a huge room with a single stone throne that was too big for The Beginning and looked really uncomfortable. She didn't have a single cushion or pillow! No wonder she was always grumpy.]

Huh. How long have you two been stuck together?

[It was quite the mystery! And if The Beginning was tied to the Crest Stone that resided in his chest, then it was likely she'd been with him not long after he was born! Which was... a little creepy to think about really.]
You mentioned before, that your 'emperor' also has a god residing within them... do you know much about that? Their situation sounds a little similar to mine.

[God, where to even start explaining this.]
Soooo... the Emperor has a harem, right? A bunch of queens and empresses, and they all exist in a hierarchy, politically. If and when an Emperor dies, the queen at the top of the hierarchy becomes the new Emperor. It's basically like the spirit of the Emperor changes into a new body once the old one is used up.

...you're correct. That's not the same thing at all.
[He had nothing against harems or transmigrations of souls or whatever, but...]
You said magic's illegal in your country, but it sounds as if the Emperor performs it quite regularly. Provided the soul transmigration is literal and not an abstract metaphor of where the successor spiritually become them by continuing on their predecessor's wishes.

Magic and religions are illegal because it's heresy to think or act in a way that undermines the Emperor or his authority. Just speaking the idea that us common folk could somehow harness any of his power, rise beyond our station, or owe our existence to anything other than his mercy will get you sent straight to the gulag at best.

[Chronos said it unthinkingly, but it was his honest assessment.]
The fact that he feels threatened by anyone wielding any form of magic shows he lacks confidence in maintaining his superiority. That's a little sad.
[Chronos was being diplomatic too. If The Beginning heard this... best she hadn't heard this.]
Hm. That means he likely hasn't been training... I wonder how he would measure up in a spar...?

If I ever end up in your world, I think I'll challenge your Emperor to a spar. I'm certain The Beginning will wish to gloat over another god too.

I'd be sorry to see you try, since I've enjoyed knowing you!

No offense.
