WHO: all
WHERE: wherever
WHEN: day 28, morning through to noon

[it's a new day, and the pasture is still in its strange new liminal state. surely nothing else wild will kick off today though, right? surely everyone's gotten it out of their systems, right?

...right...?

anyway, what are you up to?]

I expect mundane things from time to time. But maybe expecting it of fears is too much?

[looks down at his legs treading water]

And, yeah. I've had my leg crushed and healed wrong on two separate occasions. The first time it technically never healed. I just turned back time.

I'm sorry to hear it.

It seems many things went wrong indeed, for you to resort to such a measure.

Well.

[shrugs; there is a stilted way in which he pieces his words together that reflects how little he talks about this particular subject out loud]

It's true that things are better now. But the things that went wrong were my own fault. I could've lived with almost all of it.

Hindsight's often perfect, isn't it?

[huffs]

Hindsight is a nice dream. Maybe that sounds stupid from someone who went back to the past, but...I don't know. You can't fix past mistakes. You can only do better going forward.

You learn from them, at least. Some don't.

It's hard for some people to change. I'm not exactly perfect at learning from my mistakes either. You just do what you can, right?

How do you train yourself out of a fear?

Controlled exposure. I am sure there are other methods, but for myself, that has ever been the fastest way.

With the concrete examples you gave I can see how that would work. But for more intangible things it'd be harder.

More intangible ones...

[shrugging slightly]

They must simply be compartmentalized. One has to adjust, or they will dog and cripple one's everyday life. That's all there is to it.

[laughs and splashes him with a little bit of water]

That's the kind of practical response I like to hear! Most people don't like it when you compartmentalize. I don't know if it's advice I'd ever give to the kids. But it feels appropriate for this place.

[sputters slightly before shielding himself, sending a little wave back with his hands]

We're old enough to understand it better, I think. Not that the younger folk here aren't resilient, but they're also still settling into themselves. One must leave them room to figure out what methods work best.
mykidisthebest: (don't wanna be with my own thoughts)

[the water hits him full in the face and he just briefly dunks his head so that his whole head is wet any any splashing now means nothing]

I know what you mean. I don't want them to learn any bad habits. When you're old enough to have experience with what does and doesn't work, it's easier to put certain feelings away until you have a minute to deal with them.

A little while back. That midnight escapade we went on paid from several items from Red, including those. There just hasn't been an appropriate moment.

[the foreshadowing is painful every time]

As long as everyone gets through their fears quickly, we'll barely have to tread water for an hour.
