What do you know about Phantom Thieves? They're pretty popular in fiction.

Then that makes this a little easier to explain.
Phantom Thieves steal from the rich to assist the downtrodden. They have fun with their escapades, but each heist has a greater purpose.
[lifts a finger to his lips and winks]

They're metaphorical hearts. Imagine. . . if someone's distorted desires had a physical form. If that physical form were stolen, then they wouldn't have those desires anymore.

Or, at the very least, they recognize the severity of their actions. Their guilt consumes them, and they wind up turning themselves in to the authorities.
