[a tiny little grin]

What do you know about Phantom Thieves? They're pretty popular in fiction.

[nods!]

Then that makes this a little easier to explain.

Phantom Thieves steal from the rich to assist the downtrodden. They have fun with their escapades, but each heist has a greater purpose.

[lifts a finger to his lips and winks]

. . . my team of thieves-- we steal "hearts." The distorted, ugly, blackest of hearts of criminals who are otherwise untouched by the criminal justice system.

Of course not.

That'd be murder.

You and everyone else. Trust me.

[but he sounds amused]

They're metaphorical hearts. Imagine. . . if someone's distorted desires had a physical form. If that physical form were stolen, then they wouldn't have those desires anymore.

With their desires gone. . . they become "honest" people.

[as. . . honest as a criminal can be, he thinks]

Or, at the very least, they recognize the severity of their actions. Their guilt consumes them, and they wind up turning themselves in to the authorities.
