[ Your barn has a new???? (temporary???) addition! One of the outside walls now has a cabinet of various drinks, all of which sits behind what appears to be an L-shaped bar counter, complete with a sink, ice box, and glass cabinet on the inner side, and stools for customers(?) on the outer side.

Posted on the wall is a recipe book, and above it, a big chalkboard listing the various drinks from said recipe book.

Tied to the drinks cabinet are a number of ribbons in your barn's color. Wonder what those are for. ]

[shakes his head. there's something fully pitiless apparent behind the sympathy, now that they're both attuned on a tense subject, unable to be hidden. Charon's emotional remove, the muted nature of anything caring or warm or outreaching or positive Styx feels from him, isn't entirely from trained compartmentalization. some part of him is just like that too, a cold steel core, well-socialized enough to turn to good use as well as bad, but unable to bend itself far enough to reach out to Styx or anyone else's pain in a gentler way than he's already doing.

I am only saying that I wish this place would give you time to heal, and not only tire further and grieve. You have not been given enough time.

[honestly, it's the lack of pity that at all gets him to cautiously reduce the defensiveness even a little bit. he's still emotionally contorted into a tight knot, ready to go off if prodded the wrong way, but for now, the worst thing to set him off is clearly... not a thing with this guy. he doesn't need pity, he doesn't need being told "it'll work out" or "it'll get better", and he certainly doesn't need or want forgiveness for any of it. and Charon's very unlikely to do any of that, let alone be the right person for it. definitely not that.

there's still a wariness that sprung up along with the defensiveness, still that suspicion of expecting the other boot to drop. an animal used to the abuse and fully expecting it, only to be... a bit offended, a bit confused, a bit mortified at the lack of it, to hear that last part. because he's not wrong. but why would they ever expect there ever to be time?]

Why do these things ever come up in conversation? A dozen reasons, here. They're in your head now, and easy to spill if a demon sneezes wrong; or you may have cause to clarify to someone else, later on.
