Lots of luck. Some prophecy. Mostly, help from my friends. Not to mention the girlfriend who'd kick my ass if I die before her.

If I may ask, how did you choose a girlfriend? I had a long conversation with someone recently about how people form partnerships, and I realize it's a complete mystery to me.

Yeah, the difference between us.

Huh. I don't know if I'd say I chose a girlfriend? It was more like...we'd been friends for a long time before we started dating. She's been one of the best friends since we were both 12. We went through a lot together. And I guess I eventually realized that the only future I wanted was one she was in.

At what point did you make that realization? And what did you do about it at that point?

We both nearly died. The world nearly ended. A war did end. Seemed like a good time to act, you know?

I had to get up the nerve first, but we talked about it, and started going out pretty quickly after that. Like I said, we'd known each other a while, so there was a lot of time for us to develop feelings, you know?

What do you like about her?

Everything? She's awesome. Like, she's the smartest person I've ever known. She's the person I'd most want watching my back in a fight. She knows me as well as I know myself, and I think I can say the same about her. We've solved nearly problem we've ever faced together. There's nothing, and I mean nothing, we can't handle, if it's the two of us.

Does that kind of help with what you're trying to understand?

A lot of people here seem to have strong instincts to form pair bonds, but I'm unclear about how the selection process works. How do you determine who to court as a partner? Is it something your emotions decide for you? Like, it just happens whether you mean it to or not? Do you guys have some kind of idea what qualities make an ideal mate for you?

It depends a lot from person to person, I guess. For me, it was definitely emotional — not something I meant to happen or really had any control over. That's not how it's gonna be for everyone, though.
