Mute told us to expect some dead, weird fish. And that's what they knew. But she's plenty alive, as far as I can tell. And maybe even stronger than the gods. I never heard of any of them messing with a half-blood's power like this.

Right? If they could do it, they would've. Someone's definitely tried it. Kronos would've broken the gods' power over their half-bloods without a second thought, and Luke would've let him. So it's that they can't.

[ It sure has. Kevin physically recoils when he sees what’s replaced the trident. That isn’t something that CAN be changed normally as far as he knows? He’d investigated getting one himself as the Ambassador of Pluto…

He stares at it for a long moment in horror. Then looks up at Cepheus again. He might be low key on the verge of panic himself. ]

[ Kevin hesitates, not wanting to say it out loud. ]

the lack of response from cepheus probably makes it clear that this revelation is only news to one person in this conversation. he drops his hand, breathes out. ]

What's done is done. I didn't go to Meris back there expecting some fix from my dad to bail me out in the end.

I guessed pretty early on. You don't get big asks like "don't hurt the people you came here to hurt" or "get out of that person's soul" without paying for it.

[ yeah. That tracks. Kevin knows the rules of engagement for this sort of thing.

He winds up looking down at his feet for a long moment. ]

[ quiet for such a long fucking moment. tips his head up to look at the stars, answer them instead ]

[ Kevin hitches in a breath. He doesn’t ask why? He knows why. ]

What am I supposed to tell Annabeth?

[ kevin of all people knows what it is when there is no place for you in their world ]

She'll get it, when you tell her what we were up against in there. She'll want to wring my neck, but she'll get it.

If anyone can, she will. And then she'll kill me for leaving her when I promised not to. And then she'll kill me again for not coming home. And then maybe she'll be glad to see me.

Or she'll kill me again for making stupid pacts with creepy goddesses. Either/or.

[ a rattling laugh ]

[ His faint smile fades. ]

[ his shoulders tighten ]

I'll figure that one out when the time comes. We still have to survive this place.

[ Complete with random dream dunks into Tartarus even if his own dreams are somehow safe -

[ He hesitates for just a moment. He’s come to trust Lily a lot lately. Maybe more than Cepheus has. And then he nods. ]

[ A beat. ]

[ cuts himself off, eyebrows drawing together. then, slower, ]

They want to help. I get that. And it's not like I don't want to tell them anything. I'm just...trying to make sense of this first? I don't want anyone else getting hurt over this. Especially not Lily, and that includes you. It's just a lot. And I know they want us to handle problems together, but...

[ trails off helplessly ]

[ Kevin hesitates. Reaches out a hand? Hovers with it a moment before reaching to place it on Cepheus’s arm. He’s cold to the touch, as always. ]

They’re strong, but they don’t understand what they’re up against. Not like we do. They’ll jump in before they even know what they’re risking.

[ a little surprised by the contact, but also maybe a little. appreciative? ]

[ A SHUDDER. might be trembling a little, but we don't need to talk about that. ]

They think you can just stop a god, or break an oath. Like it's nothing. I made her swear on the River Styx to do what I asked.

[ A small nod. ]

They’d probably say to break it anyway, or try to take the consequences for themselves somehow.

Lethe was talking about breaking it before we even got back to the barn. That day.

[ breathes out, then scrubs his face for a second. get it together!! ]

Promise on the River Styx not to tell them what I said about going home. The rest is — what she did to my power isn't a secret. Minuet knows. I'll tell the others if they haven't guessed. I think Lethe and Charon probably have, but mortals don't get why it...matters.
