( it's a simple memory that plays for all to see: sonata, getting ready for school. the date on the calendar in the dining room reads January 27th. her mother stops her as she heads towards the door-

"Today is your birthday, isn’t it? I’m positive everyone at your school will greet you."

"Ehehe, I wonder. But if so, I’d be delighted."

"Mhm. Also, you don’t have to accept any unnecessary gifts. Make sure to also refuse taking anything unsanitary like homemade sweets, alright? And just in case, you don’t need to accept gifts that could hinder your studies like games too."

'don't need to'. ... sonata frowns as the memory continues.

"...Yes. I’ll be sure not to. Thank you, Mom."

sonata in the memory's smile fades the instant she leaves the house. and just like that, it's all gone. )

Pretty much. ... When I was Snow White in a school play as a six year old, she remade my costume with fancier materials than anyone else had. Looking back on what little I do remember, it's easy to see the sort of woman she is.

All about appearances, huh? I haven't run into that type before, but it's not hard to get the idea.

I'm not sure. I was... very obedient to her before coming here. And she always had a way of knowing if i didn't do as told.

Even when you were at school? Did she seriously not have anything better to do than stalk her own kid?

She'd have... surprise meetings with my teachers, since they all were pushing for me to go to a very prestigious medical school. Updates on my progress and grades.

They probably didn't. I've got a friend back home with a shitty dad, and none of our teachers ever say anything either.

Kinda like you get to be your own outside observer, right? It's easier to see how messed up things were when you don't remember all the excuses and reasoning you've been given to convince yourself it was fine.

Exactly. Though... it helps that I got to see the worst of it first, I think? Which sounds awful but- there was no built impression of kindness to sway things. All I got was the truth.

... Sometimes I have nightmares of her showing up here. As a weed. I'm not sure what I'd do if she ever did.

He witnessed a time when I was very little and very sick, and when I had asked her for apple-rabbits and... just for her to stay and hold my hand until I fell asleep, she called me demanding. I'd never seen him get so mad before.

I don't doubt it. He cares a lot about you and the rest of Clover. It doesn't really matter how difficult he is for the rest of us as long as that's true.

... Honestly, I want to say everything she forbid out of spite. But truthfully, I can't say for certain. ... I like... things related to music, of course. And plants. I've been wanting to get an aquarium for aquatic plants for a while now. I like the stuffed animals I've been given, and soft blankets and books. ... But I also think it'd be nice to see what others would want to share with me from their own interests. Does that make sense?

Ah. That makes sense. It was... easier for me to forgive Thistle when they respected my wishes for space afterward. I've always known Leviathan to be kind- but I'm starting to realize a lot of people are kind to me and rude to everyone else. It's a little silly, honestly.
